Listen to Lynn Knox. our Clinical Nurse Specialist, talk about how New Mind Medical can help you.
Alcohol can affect people in various ways. Whether you feel that you are drinking a bit too often or have difficulty stopping once you start, we can help. If you are concerned about the effects on yourself, your family, employment or driving we can address the issues sensitively and confidentially.
We offer a full range of alcohol services from treatment for binge drinking to medication assisted alcohol detoxification. Detoxification lasts 7 days and can take place at home or at the clinic.
We will use motivational interviewing to develop strategies to address your alcohol issues and encourage positive change. We can use medication to assist this process.
All our alcohol treatment involves full assessment of physical and mental health with blood testing where appropriate.
New Mind Medical can help you overcome the physical and psychological effects of harmful alcohol use with a structured detoxification plan.
Tried & Tested Methods
Alcohol Detoxification
For patients who are alcohol dependent, we offer alcohol detoxification. This involves preparatory work including motivational interviewing, an attempt to safely reduce alcohol consumption prior to detoxification and the use of medication where necessary. The preparatory phase also includes a physical and psychological assessment and blood testing.
The detoxification uses Chlordiazepoxide either at home or in the clinic.
We can use protective medication in the form of Acamprosate or Naltrexone after detoxification to promote abstinence.
Structured Reduction Plan
For patients with harmful levels of alcohol use, we offer motivational interviewing and a structured alcohol reduction plan to reduce or stop alcohol use. We can use Acamprosate and Naltrexone to assist the reduction and to maintain progress afterwards.
Binge Drinking
For patients with a binge drinking pattern of alcohol use, we offer motivational interviewing, Acamprosate, Naltrexone and Nalmefene treatment.
Nalmefene is taken when there is an urge to consume alcohol or when a small amount has already been consumed.
Motivational Interviewing

Medication Information
Chlordiazepoxide
Chlordiazepoxide is used to reduce the effects of alcohol withdrawal and prevent the onset of Delirium Tremens (DT’s) and seizures. It is given over 7-10 days as a reducing dose.
Acamprosate
Acamprosate is a medication used to help with cravings for alcohol. It is taken three times a day. It can be used when trying to reduce alcohol use or once alcohol use has stopped.
Naltrexone
Naltrexone is a medication taken once daily. It blocks receptors in the brain leading to reduced reward and pleasure from drinking alcohol. It can be used when trying to reduce alcohol use or once alcohol use has stopped.
You cannot take codeine products with Naltrexone.
Nalmefene
Nalmefene is similar to Naltrexone but is licenced in the UK for as required use rather than continuous use for Naltrexone. It is taken if a patient feels that they may drink alcohol or as soon as possible after starting drinking. You cannot take codeine products with Nalmefene.
Dr Stewart was the GP lead in the UK for the European Nalmefene Primary Care trial.
Don’t Suffer In Silence
At New Mind Medical, we offer protective medication following detoxification. This helps recovery and can continue for as long as necessary.
